Is making music enough to make a living

The goal is to sell that album and make it platimum, ok, maybe Gold, and its going to be the big payday. But with the major record lables not selling record like they once did a long time ago, in a galaxy that seems to be far far away, how can the recording artist make, making music their main hustle and not their 3rd part time job.
